094 Level

This is a beginner’s course for students whose ultimate aim is to enter the Senior Secondary or University Transfer program. Students work on developing all core skills- reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a participatory and interactive environment.

095 Level

This is a lower intermediate level course for students whose ultimate aim is to enter the Senior Secondary or University Transfer program. Students work on developing all core skills- reading, writing, listening, and speaking in a participatory and interactive environment.

096 Level

This is an upper intermediate course. Students are introduced to the basics of academic writing focusing mostly on paragraph development. Students also learn basic study habits required for academic study (vocabulary journals, note-taking, etc.) The emphasis of this course is placed on expanding reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in a communicative environment, requiring active student participation.

097 Level

This is a lower advanced course for students who have a basic grasp of the fundamentals of academic writing. The emphasis of this course is on preparing students to enter the University Transfer or Senior Secondary program. Students develop the language skills most needed in academic study- mainly reading and writing. Students are introduced to the basics of essay writing and learn to express and communicate complex ideas. Students at this level may co-register in one College credit course.

097A Level

This is an ongoing program for ESL students who have a high degree of fluency in English. This program is intended for students who wish to improve their communication skills for professional and/or social use. Also, students who arrive at mid-semester and are ready for the academic program may be placed in this level to further improve their English skills before the next semester. Considerable attention is given to expansion of vocabulary, consolidation of structure skills, improvement of writing, and the development of tactics for improved understanding and fluency.

Electives Courses

Slang and Idioms

This class uses film, video, and texts to introduce students to new slang and idioms. Through worksheets, dialogues, role-plays, video and textbook material, students are encouraged to use slang and idioms in the context of daily language. All core skills- listening, reading, writing, and speaking, are developed in a fun and interactive environment.

Movies and Music

This class uses popular films, videos, and songs to introduce students to new vocabulary, slang, and various aspects of North American culture. The major emphasis of this course is listening and learning new vocabulary common in everyday language. In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in class discussions about the various themes in the movies presented in classes.

Pronunciation

This is a beginner class for the 049 level. The class focuses on developing effective speaking and listening skills. Students learn basic sounds, stress, rhythm, intonation, linking, vowel reduction, and vocabulary. Students are introduced to the English phonetic system and given practice through dialogues, drama, jazz chants, games, puzzles, pair and group work.

Listening

This class provides extra listening practice to students at the 059 level. Students listen to dialogues and conversations of real life situations. Students learn new vocabulary and get practice with pronunciation. Students also learn to distinguish between similar sounds and similar words.

Current Events

This is a multi-skill class that focuses on the theme of news and current events. Students practice their reading, listening, and speaking skills through class work which includes reading, vocabulary building, listening to radio and television news reports, discussions and class presentations. This class is open to students at the 069, 079, and 080 levels.

Reading and Vocabulary

This class is available for students in all levels. Students are exposed to vocabulary through various readings, including stories, novels, and articles. Students learn to expand, build, and practice their vocabulary. Current and relevant topics make the class fun and interesting.
Conversation
This class is for 069 students. The class focuses on developing speaking and fluency by exploring interesting and relevant topics. Students are expected to participate in discussions, dialogues, role-plays, and presentations.

Writing

This class is available for students at the 059, 069, 079, and 080 levels. Students are introduced to different kinds of writing- descriptive, narrative, persuasive, etc. Students practice writing through daily assignments on interesting and relevant themes. At the 069 level, students focus on paragraph development, coherence, and formal writing styles. At the 079 and 080 levels, students focus on writing longer pieces such as stories and essays.
Academic Writing
This class is for 079 students who wish to practice and improve their academic writing skills. Students are introduced to the basics of academic writing through sentence and paragraph development, and some attention is given to essay writing. Students also learn how to express and communicate complex ideas.

TOEFL Listening / Grammar

This is a class for students preparing to take the TOEFL exam. Students use TOEFL study guides to learn the latest strategies to help them succeed in passing the exam. Students get practice in the Listening and Grammar sections through using test strategies and writing diagnostic and practice exams.

TOEFL Reading / Writing

This is a class for students preparing to take the TOEFL exam. Students use TOEFL study guides to learn the latest strategies to help them succeed in passing the exam. For the Reading section, students learn to skim, read for main ideas, identify important details, and understand vocabulary from context. For the writing section, students practice essay writing and get useful feedback from teachers. Students get practice in the Reading and Writing sections through using test strategies and writing diagnostic and practice exams
