COURSE DESCRIPTION:
A continuation of the study of the fundamental principles of organic chemistry. The interconversion of functional groups in organic synthesis. The synthesis, reactions and properties of amines, substituted benzenes, heterocycles, amino acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids.

COURSE OUTLINE:
1. Interconversion of Functional Groups. Interconversion of haloalkanes, alkenes, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones and carboxylic acids in organic synthesis.
2. Mass Spectrometry. Molecular mass determination. Fragmentation patterns.
3. Extended pi-systems and Ultraviolet and Visible Spectroscopy. Molecular orbitals of conjugated dienes.
4. Amines. Nomenclature and physical properties. Acidity and basicity of amines. Synthesis of amines. Reactions of amines.
5. Substituted Benzenes and Polycyclic Benzenoid Hydrocarbons. An overview of the properties of toluene, phenol, napthalene, anthracene, phenanthrene, etc.
6. Heterocyles. Nomenclature. Synthesis and reactions.
7. Amino Acids and Proteins. Structure and acid-base properties of amino acids. Preparation of amino acids. Peptides and proteins.
8. Carbohydrates. Nomenclature and structure. Carbohydrates in nature.
9. Lipids Fatty acids and triacylglycerols.
