Course Outline

Course Objective:     An introduction to monetary and financial economics with special reference to Canadian institutions.
 
Prerequisites:     Economics 103, Economics 105 and English 098 (corequisite)

Hours of instruction:     Three lecture hours and one problem-solving hour per week
 
Course content:     Topics include:
Interest rates, present value equations, real vs nominal, term structure
Measuring money, inflation
Role of financial intermediaries - banks, stock market, other institutions
Money and the real economy
Monetary policy and the role of the central bank
International finance - money in an open economy
