Course Outline

Number and Title of Course:    English 100, Language and Composition
 
Length of Course:  One semester (Fourteen weeks)
 
Classroom Hours Per Week:  Five classroom hours per week  (a mixture of lecture, workshop and seminar)
 
Number of Credit Units:  Three credits
 
Prerequisite:  C or better in English 099, Communications 12 or Writing 099
 
Description of Course: A course in the fundamentals of college reading and writing. Students will analyze  college level prose and write short academic papers for a variety of purposes. Attention will be devoted to process in writing, rhetorical strategies and to problems in paragraph development, grammar, mechanics and style. Through the writing of a research paper, students will be introduced to research techniques and forms of documentation.
 
Written Assignments: Students will write three essays (of about 600 words each), one research paper (approximately 1500 words)
 
Evaluation:
In-class major compositions (minimum of 3) and other writing assignments 50% - 55%
One Research Paper 10% - 20%
Final Examination 25% - 30%
