Length of Course: One semester (Fourteen weeks)

 

Classroom Hours Per Week:  four hours per week (a mixture of lecture and seminar)

 

Prerequisite: English 12 with a C+ or higher, or English 100 with a C or higher, or English 101

 

Description of Course: Literary non-fiction includes a number of closely related genres, several of which we will be studying. In our readings we will approximate definitions of these genres by identifying their characteristics, the situations from which they arise, and their purposes. Throughout the course, genres will be viewed as active and evolving responses to socially mediated occasions. Our readings will range from the origins of literary non-fiction (letters and diaries) to modern personal essays to a stylized memoir and finally to a collection of culturally reflective essays on contemporary (global) society. It is expected that by the end of the course students will be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of these various forms of literary non-fiction.
