Corequisites: Mathematics 114 and English 098
Description of Course:
Geometrical and wave mechanics, waves, sound, thermometry, properties of matter and heat.
Course Outline:
1) Optics (10 lectures) Geometrical optics, reflection & refraction, total internal reflection, polarization, mirrors, thin lenses, optical instruments & resolution, aberrations, interference, light as a wave, diffraction, Young's Experiment, coherence.
2) Heat (12 lectures) Temperature, expansion, calorimetry, kinetic theory, heat transfer: conduction, convection, & radiation, the laws of thermodynamics.
3) Oscillations (9 lectures) SHM, damped harmonic motion, forced vibrations, dynamics, resonance, combination of two harmonic motions.
4) Waves (15 lectures) Standing & travelling waves, superposition principle, wave equation, refraction, interference, diffraction sound waves, beats, Doppler Effect, shock waves & sonic boom.
5) Fluids (6 lectures) Pascal's Principle, Archimedes' Principle, Bernoulli's Equation, laminar flow in tubes.
