Textbook:  Race & Ethnicity in Canada, VicSatzewich & Nikolaos Liodakis, 2010, 2nd. Edition(Oxford University Press)

Additional Readings will be supplied during the course for careful analysis.

 

Course Description

This one-semester (3 credits) course aims to provide students with an understanding of the concepts and theories used by social scientists to analyze the importance of ethnic and racial relations  in our world.  While the focus is on Canada, race and ethnic relationships in other countries will be examined in a comparative approach. 

From the lectures, readings and discussions students will learn how to understand the potentially positive and destructive outcomes of social life in which people of different ethnic and racial backgrounds interact. This should be beneficial both at the personal as well as the social levels of our lives.

 

Student Evaluation

Students’ grades will be based on their completion of the following activities:

  • Class participation  (10%)
  • Exams  mid-term (20%), final (30%)
  • Research essay  (20%)
  • In-class exercises:  (20%)

Plagiarism and Cheating

Columbia College expects all students to uphold the principles of academic honesty . Cheating  and plagiarism (presenting another person’s words or ideas as one’s own are not acceptable behavior at any educational institution.  Depending on the severity of the offense, such acts can result in in a grade of zero on the test or or assignment, a failing grade (F) in the course or expulsion from the college.  In all cases the circumstances and the penalty are recorded in the student’s file.

Wks. 9 & 10 (Mar. 7-18):  Social Inequality;  Chap. 4

Wks. 11-13 (Mar. 21-April 8):  Racism; Chaps. 6 & 7

Final Exam week:  April 11-15.

 

Exams will test students on their knowledge of the concepts and theories discussed in class, and on their ability to critically analyze and apply these concepts and theories to specific events in the  social lives of various people.

Exams are composed of a combination of definitions, and short -answer questions; and, longer questions  that requires the application of concepts and/or theories to solve a problem.
