ABOUT THE CLUB
Have a passion for formal discussions? Want to develop public speaking skills? Need to work on articulating your points? Columbia College Debate Club will help with all that and more. The club will meet to covered topics such as argument themes (economic, social, moral + principles), how to structure a persuasive speech, writing methods to make your papers stronger, and more.
The Club Sponsor, Devon Wang is a former UBC Debate Team member.

Debate Club is always open to anyone and everyone at Columbia College! The club‘s mandate for the Summer Term is to provide accessible argumentative, critical thinking, and oratorical skills to assist in your daily and academic lives. We hope to see you participate!
You do not need to bring anything specific to meetings, just yourself and your brain.

Below is a sample ‘Shape of a Day’ which illustrates what you can expect at a Debate Club meeting.

Warm-up Activity: Introductions via “Hot Seat” – Defend a mildly controversial statement for 2 minutes |

Main Activity: Pairs are to make 1 argument using Themes/Actors/Principles (Info to be introduced) |

Work Time then Presentations Presentations will be four to six sentences: Your claim with following elaboration |

Break: Get some water, go to washroom, talk amongst themselves |

Closing Activity: Hooks – What sort of punchy titles/subheadings/hooks can you make for your arguments? |

Presentation: Each pair presents the Title/Hook to their previous argument |
