Introduction to Asian Religions
Students will study the major religious traditions of India, China, Korea, and Japan (Hindu, Sikh, Jaina, Buddhist, Confucian, Daoist, and Shinto traditions). Students will first be introduced to the interdisciplinary study of religion and proceed to use several different approaches in exploring the various religions in turn. Each unit begins with an examination of the geographic, social, and political situations out of which each religion was born, including the biographies of key figures in the religion. Students will read key scriptures (in translation), and their relationship to traditional beliefs and practices will be shown. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to discuss the various Asian religions in the context of the academic discipline of religious studies.
