Text: A Brief History of Chinese Civilization (4e), Schirokauer, C.,

Course Description:

This survey course is an introduction to Chinese history and culture. The first part of the course deals with the origins and nature of “Chinese” civilization and investigates the history of China’'s major dynasties. The last part is devoted to a closer study of the past 150 years. This course draws from a wide range of sources, including literature and video material. The continuity of “Chinese civilization” through cycles and periods of apparently drastic change is emphasized; the problems of modernization and factors which may affect the future of China are studied in the second part of the course. Throughout the course, the focus will be on the historiography of China's political and intellectual culture.
