Course Outline

Length of Course: One semester (14 weeks)

Classroom Hours per Week: 4 classroom hours per week (a mixture of lecture and seminar)

Number of Credit Units: 3 credits

Prerequisite: English 12 with a C+ or higher, or English 100 with a C or higher, or English 101

Description of Course

This course is a study of the development of the novel. The emphasis will be mainly on novels written in the 20th century although reference will be made to novels of the 19th century.
Written Assignments: Students will complete three written assignments (of about 800 words each) and one final examination.

Shorter Assignments 10%
Seminar Work 15%
Final Examination 30%


The instructor will select a number of novels for study. Current instructor outlines are available from the English Department.
