Community Connections Program: Nancy’s Journey

DSC01983 (1)

Could you please introduce a bit about yourself?

My name is Nancy, and I am an international student from Sonipat, Haryana, India. In the fall of 2021, I moved to Vancouver and enrolled at Columbia College. My major at CC is Business Administration.

How did you get the job at YWCA? What do you think about the Community Connections program?

At the beginning of Fall 2022, I received an email from Columbia College about the Community Connections program, which is a wonderful opportunity for students to work in non-profit organizations and gain valuable experience that will help them land better jobs in the future.

I submitted my application to Columbia College’s Career Advisor for the Community Connections program, where I was shortlisted for an in-person interview. Following my qualifications and preferences, I was assigned to YWCA Vancouver in the fall of 2022.

How does your day look like at YWCA?

I work as an Office Administrative Assistant with YWCA. Some of my responsibilities at YWCA include:

  • answering phones
  • greeting staff and guests
  • sorting mail & packages as well as scanning them for staff
  • assisting with event setup
  • supporting staff with booking meeting rooms and parking
  • ordering supplies for staff
  • covering the reception desk

Do you also partake in any on-campus employment, club or volunteer opportunities at the college?

In addition to working as an Office Admin Assistant at YWCA, I have been a Student Engagement Ambassador on campus since the Winter of 2022, where I assist new students with registration and provide campus tours before the semester begins

Do you have any advice for other students who are studying in Canada?

My advice to my fellow Columbia College students would be to participate more in co-curricular activities in the college because the college provides a variety of opportunities to participate in on or off-campus employment and volunteering opportunities, which are important experiences when applying for job roles after graduating! Also, don’t forget to check out the Community Connection Program!
